Marc Antony Addresses Roman Citizenry on the Death of Julius Caesar

Audio mp3 delivered past Marlon Brando

Marc Antony: Gentle Romans. Gentle Romans, hear me. Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears! I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him. The evil that men do lives afterward them. The expert is often interred with their bones. So let it be with Caesar. The noble Brutus hath told you Caesar was ambitious. If it were and so, it was a grievous fault, and grievously hath Caesar answered it.

Here, under leave of Brutus and the balance -- for Brutus is an honorable man; so are they all, all honorable men -- come up I to speak in Caesar's funeral. He was my friend, true-blue and just to me.

Merely, Brutus says he was ambitious; and Brutus is an honorable man.

He hath brought many captives abode to Rome whose ransoms did the general coffers make full. Did this in Caesar seem ambitious? When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept. Ambition should exist made of sterner stuff.

Nonetheless, Brutus says he was aggressive; and Brutus is an honorable man.

You all did see that on the Lupercal I thrice presented him a kingly crown -- which he did thrice refuse! Was this ambition?

Yet, Brutus says he was ambitious; and surely he is an honorable human being.

I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke. Only here I am to speak what I do know. You all did love him in one case, not without crusade. What crusade withholds you, then, to mourn for him? Oh, Judgment, yard art fled to hardhearted beasts, and men have lost their reason.

(Bear with me: My heart is in the bury at that place with Caesar, and I must pause till it come dorsum to me.)

Roman Citizen I: Methinks there is much reason in his saying.

Roman Denizen II: If thousand consider rightly of the matter, Caesar has had corking wrong.

Roman Citizen Iii: Has he, masters? I fright there will a worse come up in his place.

Roman Citizen Four: Marked ye his words? He would not take the crown. Therefore 'tis certain he was non ambitious.

Roman Citizen 5: If information technology exist found so, some will dear abide it.

Roman Denizen III: In that location's not a nobler man in Rome than Antony.

Roman Citizen 4: At present marker him. He begins again to speak.

Roman Citizen Half dozen: Poor soul. His eyes are blood-red as fire with weeping.

Marc Antony: Only yesterday the word of Caesar might accept stood against the earth. Now lies he there and none and then poor to do him reverence. Oh masters, if I were tending to stir your hearts and minds to mutiny and rage, I should do Brutus incorrect, and Cassius incorrect -- who, you all know, are honorable men. I will not do them incorrect. I rather choose to wrong the dead, to wrong myself and you, than I will wrong such honorable men. But here's the parchment with the seal of Caesar. I found it in his cupboard. 'Tis his will. Let but the commons hear this testament which, pardon me, I do not mean to read -- and they would go and kiss dead Caesar's wounds, and dip their napkins in his sacred blood; yea, beg a pilus of him for memory, and, dying, mention it within their wills, bequeathing it as a rich legacy unto their upshot.

Roman Citizen IV: We'll hear the will. Read it, Mark Antony.

Roman Citizen I: Nosotros will hear Caesar's will.

Roman Citizens : The will, the volition! We will hear Caesar'southward will.

Marc Antony: Have patience, gentle friends. I must non read it. It is not meet you know how Caesar loved you. You lot are not forest; yous are not stones, but men; and, being men, hearing the will of Caesar, it will inflame you; information technology volition make you mad. 'Tis good y'all know not that you are his heirs. For, if you should, oh, what would come of it!

Roman Citizen IV: Read the will; we'll hear information technology, Antony. You shall read us the will, Caesar's will.

Marc Antony: Will you be patient? Will you stay awhile? I take o'ershot myself to tell you lot of information technology. I fearfulness I wrong the honorable men whose daggers have stabbed Caesar.

Roman Denizen IV: They were traitors! "Honorable men."

Roman Citizen Six: Traitor! Murderers!

Marc Antony: You will compel me, then, to read the will? Then make a band around the corpse of Caesar, and let me show you him that made the will. Shall I descend, and will you give me leave?

Roman Citizens: Come downwardly.

Roman Citizen II: Descend.

Roman Citizen III: You shall have go out.

[Marc Antony descends]

Marc Antony: If y'all have tears, prepare to shed them now. Y'all all do know this drapery. I call up the outset time e'er Caesar put it on. 'Twas on a summer'southward evening in his tent, that twenty-four hour period he overcame the Nervii. Await, in this place ran Cassius' dagger through. See what a rent the envious Casca made. Through this the well-beloved Brutus stabbed, and as he plucked his cursed steel away, marker how the blood of Caesar followed it, as rushing out of doors, to be resolved if Brutus and so unkindly knocked, or no. For Brutus, as you know, was Caesar's angel. Judge, oh ye gods, how dearly Caesar loved him. This was the about unkindest cutting of all. For when the noble Caesar saw him stab, ingratitude, more stiff than traitors' arms, quite vanquished him. Then burst his mighty heart. And in his mantle muffling up his face, fifty-fifty at the base of Pompey's statue, which all the while ran blood, great Caesar brutal. Oh, what a fall was at that place, my countrymen. Then I, and you lot, and all of us brutal down, whilst encarmine treason flourished over us.

Now, now you weep. And I perceive you feel the dint of pity. These are gracious drops. Kind souls, what weep you when you simply behold our Caesar's vesture wounded? Look you lot hither. Here is himself, marred, as you run across, with traitors.

Roman Denizen Two: Oh, noble Caesar!

Roman Denizen Six: Oh, well-nigh encarmine sight!

Roman Citizen Two: Traitors. Villains.

Roman Citizen Three: We will be revenged!

Roman Citizen Four: Allow not a traitor alive!

Marc Antony: Stay, countrymen! Good friends, sweet friends, permit me not stir you upwardly to such a sudden flood of wildcat. They that take done this deed are honorable. What individual griefs they accept, alas, I know not that made them practice it. They are wise and honorable, and volition, no dubiousness, with reasons answer you. I come non, friends, to steal away your hearts. I am no orator, as Brutus is; but, as you know me all, a plain edgeless man that loved my friend. And that they know full well that gave me public go out to speak of him. For I have neither wit, nor words, nor worth, action, nor utterance, nor the ability of speech to stir men'southward blood. I just speak correct on. I tell you that which you yourselves practise know. Testify you sweet Caesar's wounds, poor poor impaired mouths, and bid them speak for me. But were I Brutus, and Brutus Antony, at that place were an Antony would ruffle up your spirits and put a tongue in every wound of Caesar that should movement the stones of Rome to rise in wildcat.

All Roman Citizens: Mutiny!

Marc Antony: Yet hear me, countrymen. Nonetheless hear me speak. Why, friends, you go to practice you lot know not what. Wherein hath Caesar thus deserved your loves? Alas, y'all know non.  I must tell you and so, you've forgot the will I told you lot of. Here is the will, and under Caesar's seal. To every Roman citizen he gives, to every several man, seventy-five drachmas.

Moreover, he hath left you all his walks, his private arbors and new-planted orchards on this side Tiber. He hath left them you, and to your heirs forever, mutual pleasures to walk abroad and recreate yourselves. Here was a Caesar. When comes such another?!!!
